Cate Blanchett says "nobody got paid anything" for "The Lord of the Rings"

Actress Cate Blanchett starred in the box office smash "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring," but according to her, the money raised from that success never reached the cast.

During an appearance on "Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen," Blanchett played a game called "Plead the Fifth" where she was asked about the movie that earned her the biggest payday.

"It’s probably 'Lord of the Rings,'" Cohen suggested

"Are you kidding me?" Blanchett said as Cohen expressed surprise. "No. Nobody got paid anything to do that movie."

When Cohen asked if she "got a cut of the money," referring to the practice of big stars getting a percentage of ticket sales, Blanchett said no.

"That movie was way before all that," she said. "No, nothing."

Blanchett said she made the 2001 film for the chance to work with Peter Jackson, who directed the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

"I wanted to work with the guy who made [the 1992 horror comedy film] 'Braindead,'" she said. "Basically, I got free sandwiches. And I got to keep my ears."

Blanchett played the royal elf Galadriel in the "Lord of the Rings" franchise. The first film grossed nearly $900 million worldwide. He is currently promoting his new film, "Borderlands," which opens in theaters Friday.
