The 11 Best Sci-Fi and Fantasy Movies of 2026…So Far
‘Dune: Part 2’ to ‘Civil War’, these are some of the best fantasy films that have been released this year
2026 has changed the streak of big blockbusters, with Marvel and DC almost absent, but which shows that fantasy cinema is still in very good shape and not getting on badly with the box office and so far this year we have had the return of Alex Garland, the return of Villeneuve to complete his galactic diptych and even prequels better than the original film.
Science fiction has played with the almost present dystopia, with the return of a classic like ‘Alien’, and in some examples it has also flirted with horror, which we have dedicated its own list with titles that sometimes coincide.
Science fiction and fantasy on the big screen
Before starting to break down the best of fantasy and science fiction, we remind you that Espinof has already talked about the best films of the year, the best horror films of 2026, the Netflix films, those of Amazon Prime Video, the best Disney + series and the best HBO Max series, as well as those of all of 2026. With this in mind, we begin to review the best of these genres.
‘Rebel Moon – Director’s Cut’ (Part I and Part II)

Director: Zack Snyder. Cast: Jimmy, Balisarius, Kora
The testament to director Zack Snyder’s vision of his most honest and unfiltered cinematic experience. The R-rated version offers a detailed immersion in the narrative, with additional characters and scenes, but the important thing is that it not only extends the duration, but also reshapes the journey with all the violence that was missing in the originals. If the combo was somewhat irregular due to a bump in the second part, the blood, the flying bodies and even the sex, add the element that was missing to be one of the most accurate visions of the Metal Hurlant spirit brought to the screen.

In the depths of the Seine (Sous la Seine, 2026)

Director: Xavier Gens. Cast: Bérénice Bejo, Nassim Lyes, Anaïs Parello
The Olympics in Paris created controversy even months before they started, and in this film they anticipated doubts about whether the French government could clean up the Seine in time for the water games, so nothing better than to play with satire and place a monstrous threat under the surface. The film has a TV movie look but combines action and horror, establishing parallels with ‘Jaws 3’ or ‘Piranha 3D’, playing with the ecological message of environmental negligence while criticizing empty activism to give oneself self-promotion. The catacombs scene is anthological and the ending unexpectedly dark.

Acid Rain (Acide, 2026)

Director: Just Philippot. Cast: Guillaume Canet, Laetitia Dosch, Patience Munchenbach
A plausible catastrophic scenario to show that the effects of climate change are more than just too much heat in summer. A young woman and her divorced parents must join together to escape the imminent destruction caused by acid rain, a harsh reminder of the possible dire consequences of atmospheric phenomena associated with the greenhouse effect and the inert result of humanity’s effort to survive in some unexpected circumstances. At times it seems like an annex to the new French extremism, although in reality it is as brutal as the films about the effects of nuclear war in the 80s, it should not have gone so unnoticed.

Furiosa: From the Mad Max Saga (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga)

Director: George Miller. Cast: Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Burke.
George Miller takes us back to the origins of the fierce warrior Furiosa and expands the character’s story, detailing her kidnapping and subsequent rise to power within the citadel, a journey of cold vengeance, hope and hatred, leading to an ending that connects perfectly with the beginning of ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’. Disappointing in its use of CGI and a certain arrhythmia that resolves the epic with more background and explanations than necessary, but still above many current big-budget releases.
Available for Rent: Apple TV
Dream Scenario (2026)

Director: Kristoffer Borgli. Cast: Nicolas Cage, Michael Cera, Julianne Nicholson.
Nicolas Cage has not only triumphed this year with ‘Longlegs’, but he excels in his role in this production by Ari Aster about the consequences of express fame, the absurdity of cancellation culture and the anxieties of narcissistic middle-aged men unable to move on. An absurd reformulation of Freddy Krueger with the face of a bored and neurotic history teacher that replicates the structure of the Simpsons episode in which Bart became the boy from «I Didn’t Do It» using the creepypasta ‘This-man’ as a base.
Available in streaming: Movistar Plus+
Kill Boy (Boy Kills World, 2026)

Director: Moritz Mohr. Cast: Bill Skarsgård, Yayan Ruhian, Sharlto Copley
A dystopian action comedy, revenge and survival that follows a martial arts expert seeking revenge against a tyrannical regime, while dealing with his own identity and joining forces with a group of rebels as clumsy as he is. Blood, fights and more blood in one of the most refreshing surprises of the coming summer with the production seal of Sam Raimi, it smells like a B-series from the cannon and understands the mindless pleasure of playing a retro video game and the graphic novels of the 90s.
Available in streaming: Still in theaters
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2026)

Director: Adam Wingard. Cast: Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Dan Stevens.
Godzilla is no longer fighting Kong in Adam Wingard’s first major film since You’re Next, which continues the epic saga of these iconic monsters when the gorilla discovers more of his species in the Hollow Earth and joins forces with Godzilla to combat new threats. A blockbuster that combines spectacle with old-fashioned adventure, titanic slaps and a good dose of violence and gore camouflaged with greenish colors that defy its PG-13 rating.

A Quiet Place: Day One (2026)

Director: Michael Sarnoski. Cast: Lupita Nyong’o, Joseph Quinn.
Although it serves as a prequel to the acclaimed horror series, showing the early days of the alien invasion, the movie in the hearing aid-monster saga could work on its own, even if it focused on the fight for survival in a different world instead of one where silence is the key to staying alive. It expands the universe of ‘A Quiet Place’ by maintaining the tension and emotional depth that defined the original films, but manages to connect with two characters intimately, achieving one of the most sincere blockbusters of recent years.

Dune: Part two (Dune: Part two, 2026)

Director: Denis Villeneuve. Cast: Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson
Denis Villeneuve builds on the foundations of its predecessor, elevating the conflicts and deepening the political intrigue of Arrakis, a sequel that enriches the aesthetic vision of Frank Herbert’s universe with a mix of grandeur and intimacy in the development of the characters, consolidating its place as a milestone in modern science fiction cinema in a key duo to understand why it has been a milestone of literature for so long, we will see if ‘Messiah’ completes a trilogy and we can talk about a cohesive triptych.

Civil War (2026)

Director: Alex Garland. Cast: Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura.
During the premiere there was no shortage of fingers pointing at Garland for being lukewarm in not depicting a Civil War of good guys and bad guys, but Trump’s recent assassination attempt is so well coordinated with the end of his work that it seems like he has prepared the film with a time machine. The United States is depicted in a bloody war, but the director is interested in exploring the role of journalism during any scenario of the rise of fascism. The film is a terrarium of pain and death, observed with a desensitized neutrality that reflects the harsh reality of war and the representation of it made by the media. If it put the good guys on the side of the bad guys, it would not be one of the best anti-war pieces of recent years, a fundamental milestone in an impeccable career.
